Jennings shot 9 of 16, had three assists and three steals, including a keysteal down the stretch that enabled the Bucks to push their lead to 95-83 with1:07 left.

“(He) got his team going, too, which is, as or more important,” Skilessaid. “We see a lot in the Cousins Center. We’ve seen him do a lot of things.”

Doing it at the Bucks’ practice facility is one thing, but on the home courtagainst a team that has dominated Milwaukee is another.

The Pistons had won nine of 11 against the Bucks, including five of six atthe Bradley Center before Jennings, Warrick and the reserves went to work.

Detroit led 49-38 at the half and looked headed to their second victory ofthe season. That was before Skiles changed up the game plan to free up Jenningsand everybody else.

“We went into our pick-and-roll game where we just spread the floor and lethim go to work,” Skiles said. “And, he went to work.”

So did the Bucks’ reserves who outscored the Pistons’ bench 52-14.

“We were working on cutting the lead down as much as possible, but itwasn’t just me,” Jennings said. “I thought everyone contributed well in thethird quarter to go on a nice little run.”

Trailing 49-38, the Bucks opened the third with a 28-8 run sparked byJennings’ 16 points and two steals and Warrick’s six. They led 66-57 with 2:14to go in the quarter.

“We gave them life in the third period,” Pistons coach John Kuester said.“We’ve got to come out with a certain amount of energy that had when we leftthe court, and we haven’t done that the last two games.”

Jennings picked up his fourth foul with two minutes left and went to thebench, but Milwaukee stayed on the attack and pushed the lead to 74-63 headinginto the final period.

“We just kept chipping away at the lead and next thing you know, we had thelead and we never looked back,” Jennings said.

Tayshun Prince’s 11-foot jumper from the baseline pulled the Pistons to81-77 with 5:51 to play, but Warrick made two free throws and Jennings hit arunner in the lane as the Bucks went up by eight.

Playing with five fouls over the final three minutes, Jennings dartedthrough the Pistons’ defense and kept the Bucks from failing down the stretch.

He left to a standing ovation when Skiles took him out of the game.

Ben Gordon(notes) scored 26, Rodney Stuckey(notes) 13 and added eight assists and Princehad 12 points for Detroit.

Richard Hamilton(notes) missed his second game with a sprained right ankle. He didnot play in the Pistons’ 91-83 loss at home to Oklahoma City on Friday. ThePistons won their opener at Memphis.

Charlie Villanueva(notes) had four points in the opening quarter in his firstregular-season appearance as a Piston after spending the previous three seasonswith the Bucks. He got going in the fourth quarter when he hit two 3s and ajumper and finished with 12 points. He signed as an unrestricted free agent withDetroit in July.

“We were moving the ball great in the first half,” Villanueva said. “Thatwasn’t the case in the second half.”

Michael Redd(notes) and Andrew Bogut(notes), who were brought along slowly during thepreseason, returned to the Bradley Center for the first time since eachsustained season-ending injuries in January that crushed the Bucks’ hopes fortheir first playoff appearance since the 2005-06 season.

Redd, who scored 17 points Friday night, tore ligaments in his left kneeagainst Sacramento Jan. 24. He missed the last 35 games of the season.

Redd had nine points against the Pistons, but left during the third quarterwith left knee soreness. The Bucks said that taking him from the game was moreof a precaution and that he was day to day.

Bogut, who missed the final 31 games with a sore lower back, had six pointsand eight rebounds.

NOTES: Pistons coach John Kuester said that Hamilton, who did not make thetrip, was day to day. … Bucks G/F Carlos Delfino(notes) was back after serving aone-game suspension for his role in a preseason fight with Pistons F AustinDaye(notes). … Last season’s “American Idol” finalist Danny Gokey sang the NationalAnthem in front of his hometown crowd and then entertained them at halftime.

“We’ve got a pretty young team and we’ve got a bunch of new faces on thisteam so the scouting report is not that big,” Carl Landry(notes) said. “We’ve gotguys that are hungry who are going out there every night and fighting hard toget us in the ‘W’ column.”

Houston had to overcome a 42-point performance by Brandon Roy(notes) and adetermined Trail Blazers offense that kept the game close to the end.

“Ariza and Brooks did whatever they wanted,” Portland coach Nate McMillansaid. “They controlled the ball and made their shots.”

Ariza’s previous career high was 26 points last March 15 for the Los AngelesLakers against Dallas.

The Rockets hit 12 of 24 3-point baskets and shot 50.6 percent overall forthe game. Ariza was 5 for 8 from 3-point range.

Ariza started 20 games for the Lakers last season. He expects to see moreplaying time with the Rockets. He already likes the fast pace.

“If that’s what it takes for us to win then that is how we need to play,”Ariza said. “No matter how tired we are, no matter what the situation is orwhat the odds are. If we want to win, we have to play that way every night.”

Houston led 59-54 at the half and never lost the lead. Portland got to 87-84early in the fourth quarter but never could push ahead. LaMarcus Aldridge(notes) scored27 points for the Trail Blazers and Andre Miller(notes) had 15.

Brooks’ 28 points missed his career high of 30 last March 6 against Phoenix.

The Rockets led by 11 early in the second quarter and they were up 54-44with 2:20 remaining in the first half. Roy had eight second quarter points, including a pair of 3-pointers down the stretch to keep it close at the halfwith the Rockets leading 59-54.

“Right from the start, we were in trouble giving up 33 points in the firstquarter,” McMillan said. “Our transition game is important and we nevercontrolled the ball. Houston got to the basket and made their shots.”

Ariza broke loose with 16 first quarter points to get the Rockets started. He was 6 for 6 from 2-point range and hit both 3-pointers, and the Rockets easedto a 33-28 first quarter lead.

Aldridge hit his first five shots, and the Trail Blazers took the earlylead, hitting 12 of their first 14 points in the paint.

The Rockets knocked the Trail Blazers out of the playoffs last year with a4-2 series win in the first round.

“Our defense was not very good, right now we’re not giving much effort onthe defensive end and that’s where it starts,” Roy said. “It doesn’t seem likeour effort is there. I see a team that’s stinking too much right now.”

NOTES: Rockets coach Rick Adelman still ranks as the second winningest coachin Trail Blazers history (291-154) behind Jack Ramsay. Portland’s loss to Denveron Thursday came despite a 43-42 halftime Trail Blazer lead. Portland wasunbeaten (26-0) last season when leading at halftime at the Rose Garden.Portland plays 19 back-to-backs this season. They were 23-4 last year in thesecond game of back-to-backs.

CLEVELAND (AP)—Delonte West(notes) scored 13 points in his delayed season debut, MoWilliams(notes) added 24 and LeBron James(notes) 14 as the Cleveland Cavaliers, back at fullstrength, rolled to a 90-79 win over the Charlotte Bobcats on Saturday night.

West’s turbulent offseason finally brought him back to the floor. Aftermissing all eight preseason games and Cleveland’s first three of the regularseason to deal with personal issues, the troubled and valuable West was clearedby team doctors, ending more than a month of drama.

He went 5 of 7 from the field in 24 minutes.

Vladimir Radmanovic(notes) scored 12 and D.J. Augustin(notes) 11 to lead Charlotte, whichhas never won in Cleveland.

The Cavaliers trailed 46-45 early in the third before going on a 21-8 run—much of it with center Shaquille O’Neal(notes) on the bench—to open a 14-point leadentering the fourth. West was a factor in helping the Cavs distance themselvesfrom the Bobcats, who were understandably exhausted after playing two overtimeson Friday night in a win over New York.

James scored six straight points as Cleveland opened a 57-51 lead and Westfollowed with his first basket of the season. Getting the ball on the rightside, he gave a shoulder fake to Gerald Henderson(notes) and dropped a step-back jumperfor his first basket this season.

Before the third quarter closed, West made two free throws and a 3-pointeras the Cavs pushed their lead to 66-54.

The Cavs are still getting used to playing with the 14-time All-Star O’Neal, who made his first free throws of the season after 10 consecutive misses. He hadeight points and five rebounds in 26 minutes. Zydrunas Ilgauskas(notes), now coming offthe bench with O’Neal around, went 5 for 5 from the floor.

The Bobcats clawed back within 10 in the fourth, but Williams madeconsecutive 3-pointers to make it 80-64 and the Cavs coasted.

Coach Mike Brown subbed for West with 1:33 left and the likable guard got ahuge cheer and was welcomed back to the bench by his teammates who know betterthan anyone what he means to the Cavs and their chances at winning an NBA titlethis season.

West entered the game with 4:22 left in the first quarter and received astanding ovation from the Quicken Loans Arena crowd.

He made an almost immediate contribution, hustling to save a ball that wasgoing out of bounce and flipping it to James, who then fed Anderson Varejao(notes) fora dunk. West started the second quarter and came out with 6:25 left beforehalftime.

Cavs general manager Danny Ferry has been working closely with team doctorsand a support team around West. He said the decision to play West on Saturdaywas a consensus among all parties.

“Steps were followed and this is the next step of his process,” Ferrysaid. “We’re taking it one day at a time, but he’s doing well.”

The 26-year-old West, who has been treated in the past for bipolar disorder, was arrested in September for carrying three concealed weapons when he waspulled over by Maryland police near his home. He reported to training camp ontime but missed the Cavs’ first four practices without an excuse. He returnedbut then left the team for a week to deal with his personal matters.

Last week, West’s wife filed a domestic violence report against him.

But that was all in the past—for at least one night.

James went nearly the entire first half without a field goal. He didn’tscore his first basket—a 20-foot jumper—until there was only 1:21 leftbefore halftime. More troubling than James’ slow start was that the Cavs shot 63percent (20 of 32) from the field in the first half and only led 45-41 at thebreak.

NOTES: Charlotte is 0-10 in Cleveland and the Bobcats have lost sevenstraight overall to the Cavs. … The Bobcats remain without Gs Raja Bell(notes)(sprained wrist) and Flip Murray(notes) (shin), who have yet to play this season. CoachLarry Brown said Murray may play Monday at home against New Jersey and Murraycould return Friday against Atlanta.

WASHINGTON (AP)—New Jersey Nets point guard Devin Harris(notes) said he’ll besidelined at least a week because of an injured right groin.

Harris sat out Saturday night’s game against the Washington Wizards and willleave the Nets’ road trip Sunday to see a specialist in Chicago.

Harris said he’s aiming to return in seven to 10 days.

“Maybe longer,” he said. “It’s not going to be shorter.”

Harris originally hurt the groin in an exhibition game on Oct. 13 andreinjured it during Friday’s loss to Orlando.

“I’m a little past frustrated right now,” Harris said. “At this point, you’ve just got to wait it out.”

Harris averaged 15 points, 7.5 assists and 5.5 rebounds in the Nets’ firsttwo games. He said his movement was restricted during Friday’s game.

“I felt like I couldn’t beat certain guys off the dribble,” Harris said.“I can’t play that way.”

After his visit with the specialist, Harris will head to New Jersey. He saidhe wants to make sure the injury is completed healed before he returns.

“When I come back, I have to feel nothing—nothing at all,” Harris said.

Asked if he was afraid the injury was major, Harris groaned.

Coach Lawrence Frank said the Nets want to “exhaust all options” to getHarris healed.

“With any player you want to do everything you can,” Frank said, “to makesure he’s healthy so it’s not recurring.”

Rafer Alston(notes) started in Harris’ place Saturday.

While the Mavs paraded to the line as the Lakers racked up 29 fouls, LosAngeles got there just 14 times, hitting nine shots.

The Lakers never made a run in the fourth, getting derailed by horrendousshooting and turnovers by Lamar Odom(notes), Josh Powell(notes) and Bryant. Their lonehighlight was Brown’s thundering dunk off Bryant’s jumper that bounced off therim. It got the crowd on its feet in a collective exclamation even with theLakers trailing by 12.

The fans were on their feet again to hit the exits with three minutesremaining and the Mavs ahead 90-73.

Dallas extended its lead to 73-54 in the third on a 13-2 run, with fourpoints from Nowitzki and five by Terry. Two free throws and a driving layup byJose Barea later gave Dallas its largest lead of 22 points. Barea finished with12 points.

Jazz dominate 4th, keep Clippers winless

October 31, 2009

SALT LAKE CITY (AP)—The Utah Jazz’s preseason pledge to improve defensivelylooked forgotten until late in the third quarter of their home opener.

The Jazz tightened up the defense to trigger a 15-0 run, then held the LosAngeles Clippers to 14 points in the final period of a 111-98 victory on Fridaynight.

Utah’s home opener was in danger with the Jazz trailing by as much as sixbefore they finally stopped trying to just outscore the Clippers and actuallyshut them down.

“We didn’t play much defense in the first three quarters of this game, thenturned it on in the fourth,” said Deron Williams(notes), who had 21 points and nineassists for the Jazz. “We’ve got to have it for the full 48 minutes. There’s noexcuses.”

Paul Millsap(notes) led the Jazz with 23 points, scoring 14 in the final periodwhile leading the Jazz in a rally that quickly put away the winless Clippers.

Carlos Boozer(notes) had 20 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists, Andrei Kirilenko(notes)added seven assists and Kyrylo Fesenko(notes) scored 10 points in his second careerstart.

Scoring was never a problem for the Jazz, but stopping the Clipperscertainly was until midway through the second half. Los Angeles went just 3 for11 from the floor in the final quarter, never recovering after Utah followed a5-0 run at the end of the third with 10 straight points to start the fourth.

“That’s what we need to see more out of us,” Millsap said. “We’re capableof doing that night in and night out. We need to continue to execute and getstops on the defensive end.”

Eric Gordon(notes) scored 22, and Baron Davis(notes) and Chris Kaman(notes) added 21 pointsapiece for the Clippers, who fell to 0-3.

“I think it was three quarters of good basketball for us,” Kaman said.“The fourth quarter obviously was a struggle. They kind of took it to us.”

Ronnie Brewer(notes) added 17 points as the Jazz avoided their first 0-2 startsince 2002.

The Jazz outrebounded the Clippers 48-35, with Millsap pulling down seven ofhis nine boards in the second half as Utah overcame a sluggish start in its homeopener despite having only 10 available players because of injuries.

“Millsap came in and gave them a big lift in that second half,” Clipperscoach Mike Dunleavy said. “He really hurt us.”

Utah scored five straight points to pull within 84-83 at the end of thethird, then opened the fourth on a 10-0 run. Millsap hit a jumper, then drew afoul on the next possession and made both free throws.

Brewer then took over with a layup, followed by a steal that he took all theway to the other end for a dunk to put the Jazz up 91-84 with 10:23 left in thegame.

The Clippers went without a field goal in the fourth quarter until AlThornton’s(notes) layup on a three-point play with 6:26 left in the game cut it to95-90.

The Jazz scored the next six after a timeout, then Millsap snuffed a layupattempt by Davis with 3:55 left. He added a jumper in the lane to put Utah up106-92 with 3:30 to go.

“He scores in bunches,” Williams said. “He’s one of those guys that getshot and starts feeling it. He did that at the right time tonight.”

The Jazz were handcuffed by fouls in the first half and played soft defense, allowing the Clippers to tie it at 60 on Gordon’s three-point play with a secondremaining in the second period.

Utah stayed out of foul trouble early in the third, but the defense wasn’tany better for the first few minutes. Davis took a steal in for a layup, thengot another layup off an inbounds play during a 10-4 run that put the Clippersup 80-74 with about three minutes left in the period. Boozer was several feetoff with an airball during Utah’s dry spell, which got many boos from the homefans.

The Jazz recovered in the final few minutes of the quarter, drawing within84-83 on Millsap’s three-point play with 1.2 seconds left.

O’Neal’s 22 and 12 power Heat by Pacers

October 31, 2009

INDIANAPOLIS (AP)—Jermaine O’Neal(notes) claims he’s not angry with the IndianaPacers for trading him before last season.

He might have fooled his old fans. He had 22 points and 12 rebounds againsthis former team, and the Miami Heat beat the Pacers 96-83 on Friday night.

O’Neal was the Pacers’ best player before the franchise fell apart followingthe brawl between Pacers players and Detroit Pistons fans in 2004. The Pacerstraded O’Neal to Toronto before the 2008-09 season as they focused on rebuildingwith younger players.

O’Neal says he has moved on.

“I don’t have any animosity with this organization anymore,” O’Neal said.“I told myself that I would let that go, I would close that door, close thatchapter.”

Still, he was animated throughout the game, drawing a technical foul forhanging on the rim after a dunk in the second quarter. He said that was moreabout finally having healthy knees than showing up the Pacers.

“It was a good call,” O’Neal said. “It was a little bit overboard, butit’s been a while since I’ve been able to just catch and take off. I’m justshowing you guys some of the work I’ve put together this summer.”

O’Neal later smiled when Pacers fans booed him. Dwyane Wade(notes), who led Miamiwith 32 points, thought the Pacers fans were wrong to treat O’Neal that way.

“Unfortunately, when some players leave a city they get booed, but when youthink Indiana Pacers, you think Reggie Miller and Jermaine O’Neal,” Wade said.“He’s one of the guys who helped build this organization, this franchise. Hecame back today and was very professional about his approach.”

The Heat have won their first two games by a combined 35 points. It wasWade’s first win ever at Indiana, and only the sixth win at Indiana for the Heatin their 22-year history. The Pacers had won 14 straight at home dating to 2001.

“It’s kind of a monkey off our back to finally get a win here,” Wade said.“This Indiana Pacers team is tough with the offense they run, with the movementthey have. I’m glad we were able to jump out the way we did and withstand theirrun. I really saw a lot from my young team today.”

Danny Granger(notes) led the Pacers with 22 points, but shot 6 of 20 from thefield. Troy Murphy(notes), Solomon Jones(notes) and Luther Head(notes) each scored 12 points.

Indiana shot 37 percent and made just 4 of 23 3-pointers.

“That’s a rough shooting night,” Granger said. “You have some of thosenights, and usually you have to rely on your defense, but we just couldn’t putthe game together.”

Granger’s emergence was one reason O’Neal was OK with the Pacers tradinghim. O’Neal always had said Granger had All-Star potential, and Granger lived upto it by playing in the All-Star game last season.

“Some people here think I quit on them, but I didn’t quit on them,” O’Nealsaid. “You got a young budding star in Danny Granger, you’ve got to be matureenough to say, ‘OK, my time is over here.’ Reggie Miller did the same thing forme, so why wouldn’t I do the same thing for Danny.”

O’Neal looked like the player who finished third in the league MVP ballotingin 2004, and nothing like the one who hobbled through his final years with thePacers. Friday’s effort followed a 22-point, 12-rebound performance in theseason-opening rout of New York. He posted his first consecutive 20-point,10-rebound efforts since he was a Pacer in December 2007.

Miami led 49-47 at halftime, then O’Neal scored eight points and MichaelBeasley(notes) added six in a 16-4 run to start the second half that put the Heat up65-51. Miami led 79-63 at the end of the third quarter.

Head made back-to-back buckets that cut Miami’s lead to 79-69 with 10minutes to play. The Pacers had numerous chances to cut further into the leadbecause Miami went cold in the fourth quarter, but the Pacers got no closer thaneight points.

The Pacers have opened the season with two double-digit losses while tryingto work in some new players.

“We’re still trying to figure each other out,” Granger said. “Honestly, our defense wasn’t that bad. It’s just, offense, I really don’t think weunderstand each other yet, how everybody plays, what everybody likes to do.”

O’Neal spent extra time chatting with fans after the game. He believes hisplace in Pacers history is secure.

“I still love the city and I still have my memories here. You can’t takethat away,” O’Neal said. “If they want to say who was one of the best playersto ever play in this organization, then they have to do it by the numbers.Numbers don’t lie.”

The numbers didn’t lie on Friday, either. Indiana’s Roy Hibbert(notes) and SolomonJones combined for 11 fouls.

“I think our young guys got a lesson,” Indiana coach Jim O’Brien said.“Roy and Solomon really got schooled by Jermaine O’Neal. But they’ll get betterby playing guys like that.”

Notes: Hibbert committed two fouls against O’Neal in the first 2:11 of thegame. He finished with five fouls in 16 minutes. … The Pacers shot 24 percentin first quarter. … Indiana C Jeff Foster(notes) sprained his right ankle in thefirst quarter and did not return. … Indiana G Mike Dunleavy (knee) and F TylerHansbrough(notes) (right shin) sat out.

Paul, Okafor lead Hornets past Kings

October 31, 2009

NEW ORLEANS (AP)—Who needs the preseason?

Emeka Okafor(notes), a year-round fitness fanatic, missed it and seems to be doingfine.

After sitting out training camp and all eight preseason games with asprained toe, Okafor returned for the Hornets’ season-opening loss in SanAntonio and was one of the bright spots with 18 points and 10 rebounds.

As the Hornets prepared to play their home opener against Sacramento, coachByron Scott, known for his grueling training camps, smiled when asked whatOkafor’s debut told him, replying that his training camp and preseasonapparently don’t mean much.

Okafor then more or less went out and proved that very point against theKings with 11 points, 13 rebounds and four blocks for his second straightdouble-double. Paul scored 13 of New Orleans’ last 17 points and David West(notes)added 13 points for the Hornets.

Tyreke Evans(notes) scored 22 points and Kevin Martin(notes) added 20 for Sacramento, which led 91-88 on Martin’s running floater off the glass.

Paul then hit the shot of the game, a spinning layin off the glass as he wasfouled while absorbing a knee to the groin. After bending over at the waist fora few seconds, Paul went to the line and made the free throw to tie it at 91with 1:16 to go.

New Orleans led 93-91 on Okafor’s one-handed follow jam of Paul’s missedjumper. Sacramento’s Jon Brockman(notes) missed his second of two free throws and JasonThompson(notes) got his 12th rebound to give the Kings another possession, trailing93-92 with 15.2 seconds left.

Evans dribbled toward the lane, but his mid-range jumper was blocked byOkafor and Paul snagged the loose ball before being fouled and hitting both freethrows to make it 95-92 with 5.9 seconds left.

Sacramento then got the ball to Martin for an attempted 3 in the corner andOkafor made another key block. The Hornets quickly got the ball to Paul, who hittwo more foul shots.

“It was an unbelievable block by Emeka,” Paul said. “I told him I wasgoing to stay with Kevin, but he actually lost me for a second. Emeka helpedme.”

Julian Wright(notes) scored 11 points in his new role as a starter and wasproviding pressure on Okafor’s block of Evans. Peja Stojakovic(notes), now coming offthe bench behind Wright, had 10 points.

Andres Nocioni(notes) had 16 points for the Kings, who won an NBA-worst 17 gameslast season and are still looking for their first victory under new coach PaulWestphal.

“I’m very proud of them,” Westphal said. “They proved they can compete. It’s the little things we need to learn as a team. … We were in position towin the game. They closed the deal and we didn’t.”

Sacramento outrebounded New Orleans 52-43, but shot only 37.5 percent (36 of96), was outscored 26-13 at the free throw line and was held to 30.4 percentshooting in the second half (14 of 46). New Orleans shot 45.2 percent (33 of 73)for the game and had nine blocks.

The Kings led by eight points when Beno Udrih’s(notes) 3-pointer capped an 8-2 runlate in the third quarter to put the Kings up 73-65. Paul’s driving layup and3-pointer with a second left in the period helped the Hornets pull to 75-72.
