“It is a big win, to go into one of the best arenas in the league and wintheir home opener,” coach Scott Brooks said.

Last season’s poor start cost coach P.J. Carlesimo his job.

Ben Gordon(notes), starting for the injured Richard Hamilton(notes), had 25 points in hishome debut for Detroit after scoring 22 in its season-opening win at Memphis.Rodney Stuckey(notes) scored 21, but had just two assists.

Hamilton, who will also be out Saturday at Milwaukee, sprained his rightankle Wednesday night in the Pistons’ opener.

Durant made go-ahead free throws late in the third quarter and kept OklahomaCity ahead in the fourth with an array of shots such as a dunk, fadeaway and3-pointer.

The young Thunder, though, had more than just Durant to beat the rebuildingPistons.

Jeff Green(notes) had 16 points for Oklahoma City, Nenad Krstic(notes) scored 14 andRussell Westbrook(notes) had 10 points and 10 assists.

“They are well-coached and they have a wealth of young talent,” Detroitcoach John Kuester said. “They’ve added Krstic, somebody I coached in NewJersey, Kevin Ollie(notes), one of my favorite players of all time, and Etan Thomas(notes), ahigh energy player, that gives them a nice mix.”

The Pistons started strong, leading 24-16 after the first quarter, butstruggled to find a rhythm on offense the rest of the game.

“Guys’ body language wasn’t the same in the second half as it was in thefirst half,” Gordon said.

In the fourth quarter, Detroit didn’t have an assist and it finished withmore turnovers (15) than assists (12) and shot just 37 percent from the field.

“It seemed like there was a lid on that rim,” Charlie Villanueva(notes) saidafter missing nine of 12 shots in his home debut with the Pistons.

Detroit started last season as an Eastern Conference contender, thenrevamped the team early in the season by trading Chauncey Billups(notes) to Denver forAllen Iverson(notes), cap space and playing time for Stuckey. In the offseason, thePistons lost Rasheed Wallace(notes) and Antonio McDyess(notes) to free agency and expectationsfor this season plummeted.

“We’re a work in progress,” Kuester said after his second game as an NBAhead coach.

Detroit’s biggest moves over the summer were signing Gordon and Villanuevaas free agents. While Gordon has delivered so far, Villanueva has made justthree shots in each of his first two games.

Villanueva hopes to bounce back Saturday night at Milwaukee, which didn’tmake a qualifying offer to keep him as a restricted free agent.

“I’m going to be poised and let the game come to me,” he said.“Hopefully, I won’t miss as many shots.”

The Thunder, meanwhile, look like they might be as good as they are young.

Oklahoma City’s starting lineup doesn’t have a player with more than fiveyears’ experience and overall, it has the second-youngest team in the league.Rookie James Harden(notes) had eight points and eight assists in his first NBA roadgame.

Detroit led for much of the first three quarters, then fell behind 62-61after eight lead changes and seven ties.

The Thunder simply wouldn’t let them come back in the fourth quarter as asparse crowd thinned out in an arena that used to be regularly packed.

The Pistons announced the game was a sellout, but there were a lot ofpatches of unoccupied seats in the upper level.

“The fans shouldn’t be discouraged,” Gordon said. “It’s a new team and weall knew before the season, it’s a work in progress.”

NOTES: The Pistons paid tribute to their late owner, William Davidson, bynaming the court after him and with “MR. D” stitched into the back of theircollar in a permanent addition. … Seattle started 3-0 six years ago. …Gordon’s head hit the court late in the first half and he played the second witha bandage covering three stitches above his left eyebrow. … Detroit’s startingfrontcourt combined for three points, an offensive rebound, a block and eightfouls in the second half.

Cavaliers get first win behind James’ 24

October 31, 2009

MINNEAPOLIS (AP)—LeBron James(notes) and the Cleveland Cavaliers can relax a little. They haven’t lost their touch, after a rough start to this experimental season.

Determined to get the Cavaliers to play a complete game, James had 24 pointsand nine rebounds in Cleveland’s first victory of the season, 104-87 over theMinnesota Timberwolves on Friday.

“If they continue to play hard like they did tonight and move the ball likethey did,” coach Mike Brown said, “we’re going to get some wins while we’regoing through this process.”

James took most of the fourth quarter off, finishing with six assists in 34minutes and avoiding his first 0-3 start in five years. He shot 10 for 18 fromthe field while the Cavaliers used the renovated Timberwolves to revive theirdefense, which allowed an average of 98 points in defeats by Boston and Torontothis week.

They were better offensively, too, thanks to that crisp ball movement.

Mo Williams(notes) added 20 points with six assists and no turnovers, after amutual effort to get him going. Zydrunas Ilgauskus had 11 of his 15 points inthe first half to help make up for some early lulls, and Daniel Gibson(notes) drainedthree 3-pointers during a 3-minute stretch of the fourth quarter to end anyfaint hope the Wolves had of repeating their rally from two nights earlier.

Shaquille O’Neal(notes) picked up his fourth foul in the third quarter, which letthe Cavs briefly revert to their pre-Shaq look.

“We kind of know how to feel off each other and go off each other,” Jamessaid. “When Big Fella got into some foul trouble, that cohesiveness that we’vehad in the past regained itself.”

That’s the challenge for Brown, James and the rest of the team—figuringout how to incorporate O’Neal into the lineup without slowing it down.

“It’s hard for new guys, with the offense that we’re running anddefensively. We do things different than most teams,” Ilgauskus said. “Soit’ll take a little while for Shaq to get comfortable, and it’ll take a whilefor us to get to know where he wants the ball. He’s a force in the middle.Obviously when he’s out there we need to use him.”

Al Jefferson(notes), working his way back into form from knee surgery lastFebruary, had a quiet 12 points and eight rebounds with O’Neal jockeying forroom with him underneath. Jefferson wished aloud beforehand he hadn’t lost those30 pounds during rehab, because of this matchup with the behemoth O’Neal, whohad six points and seven rebounds in 19 minutes.

The Wolves have an even bigger experiment in the works, trying to learn the“triangle” system under new coach Kurt Rambis. He’s taking a patient approachtoward this young team.

“The Cleveland Cavaliers can go out there and play with teams. … Nomatter what’s going on, they’ve got somebody who can create opportunities andget anywhere he wants on the floor,” Rambis said. “We don’t have players likethat, so we’ll have to fight, scratch and claw from the opening tip on.”

Jonny Flynn(notes) had 17 points for the Wolves, who again missed Kevin Love’s(notes)rebounding ability. They overcame that deficiency to turn a 16-point deficitagainst New Jersey on Wednesday into a buzzer-beating victory.

“Of course you’re going to struggle a bit with a new offense, an offense wenever ran before,” Jefferson said. “The only time we ever ran this offense ispreparing to play the Lakers in shootaround or practice.”

During the 12-2 run the Cavs used to stretch their lead late in the secondquarter, James was the picture of cool.

He spent the first part of the period on the bench, watching the Wolves takea pair of one-point leads with their subs in, but shortly after re-entry hefinished a fast break with a determined drive and spin dribble for a layup, fouland three-point play.

Then after a steal by Anthony Parker(notes), James raced to the hoop again andthrew down a dunk from a foot or so inside the free throw line. His pull-upjumper gave the Cavs their biggest lead of the half, 51-38.

NOTES: Delonte West(notes) was inactive again for the Cavaliers. He hasn’t playedyet because of personal issues. … Rambis was given permission from the medicalstaff to stretch Jefferson’s playing time. Bothered by a sore Achilles’ tendonthis month, Jefferson has played 25 minutes in each of the first two games. Thekey will be how he feels the day after. “During the game he’s probably going tofeel fine,” Rambis said. “We just don’t want to stress him too much that wesend him backwards.” … Vikings offensive lineman Bryant McKinnie, who couldprobably post up Shaq at 6-foot-8 and 335 pounds, sat courtside. He posted apicture on his Twitter feed and exclaimed: “I’m so close I can trip the ref!”

“That was beautiful to watch,” Garnett said of the scoring by dominance byPierce and teammate Ray Allen(notes) one quarter earlier. “To watch those two play andbuild the lead up while they were in there.”

Allen, who finished with 20 points, scored nine of Boston’s last 13 in thesecond as it opened a 50-35 halftime edge.

Pierce then hit five 3-pointers after intermission, building the Celtics’lead to 88-61 after three quarters.

“When Ray and Paul are making shots like that, that’s pretty darn good,”Boston coach Doc Rivers said.

Garnett, who missed the final 25 games of the regular season and theplayoffs with strained ligaments in his right knee, added 16 points. Rajon Rondo(notes)had 16 assists and eight rebounds as the Celtics improved to 3-0.

Eddie House(notes) came off the Boston bench and was shooting freely in garbagetime, finishing with 22 points.

John Salmons(notes) led the Bulls (1-1) with 16 points and 10 rebounds. JanneroPargo(notes) had 13 points, and Tyrus Thomas(notes) and Joakim Noah(notes) 10 apiece.

“It’s an early season test for us and we didn’t respond real well,” Bullscoach Vinny Del Negro said. “In the third they just jumped on us. We weren’tphysical enough. They’re difficult to contend with.”

Unlike their opening-round playoff series that saw the teams play a recordseven overtime quarters in four games and had one game decided in the closingseconds, Boston broke this one open early in the first half.

The Celtics pushed their lead to double digits for the first time at 29-19on Sheldon Williams’ fast-break layup early in the second quarter.

The Bulls closed the deficit to nine points on Noah’s basket less than aminute later, but it was the last time they’d be within single digits.

That’s when Allen took over, using screens to get open and hitting all threefield goal attempts. He was also 4 for 4 from the free throw line.

Boston looked determined to put away the Bulls quickly in the second half, with Pierce nailing his five 3s in the third quarter to make it a blowout.

“When you’re a scorer and you make a couple, you feel like you’re onfire,” Pierce said.

Garnett heard Pierce say it was time to break open the game, then watchedhis teammate personally do it.

“Paul said in the locker room, `Let’s open the third quarter big and stayaggressive,”’ Garnett said.

“It was special just to block the shot and then be able to finish the playwith a perfect assist from Mike Bibby(notes),” Smith said.

Smith blocked another shot to cap a strong defensive effort by the Hawks.

“That’s impressive, to see somebody block that many shots,” said Atlanta’sMarvin Williams(notes). “He’s got it figured out. He should write a book orsomething.”

Coach Mike Woodson said the Hawks “made a serious effort on defense andrebounding the ball.”

Arenas had 23 points and Brendan Haywood(notes) added 19 for Washington.

“They began to gain control of the game in the second quarter when theylocked in defensively.”

The Sixers turned around an atrocious performance in the opener againstOrlando that saw them trail by as many as 31 points.

The Bucks, who have finished last in the Central Division all five seasonssince the NBA’s realignment, blew a 47-41 halftime lead, then slicedPhiladelphia’s lead to five points late in the fourth.

Jason Kapono(notes), acquired from Toronto to give the Sixers the long-range boostthe worst 3-point shooing team in the league needed, nailed a 3 and Iguodalasank a 17-footer during a 10-0 run that helped the Sixers start to creep away.

Iguodala picked up his game after a three-basket, eight-point clunkeragainst the Magic. Coach Eddie Jordan said before the game he wasn’t going to beconcerned with one bad outing. He had to like the effort in this victory.

Brand wasn’t $80 million good, but it was a chance to show the home fans hecan do more than look good in a suit on the bench. He was all over the court inthe third quarter, disrupting the Bucks and wiping out their halftime lead.

Brand’s steal led to him making two free throws. He made a jumper that gavethe Sixers their first lead of the second half, then hit a pretty fade that tiedthe game after the Bucks briefly went ahead.

Lou Williams put the Sixers ahead for good at 56-55 with two free throws. The Sixers went 19 of 20 from the line in the quarter.

The Bucks played without guard Carlos Delfino(notes), suspended one game for hisrole in an altercation during a preseason game.

The Sixers only tinkered with their roster in the offseason—point guardAndre Miller(notes) was the biggest defection—but it’s a whole new atmosphere at theWachovia Center. Yes, even with discounted $10 upper level tickets available, itwas still a mediocre crowd at the opener in a city whipped into World Seriesmadness. But the organization took action off the results of a fan survey thatproved there was too much unwanted noise during games.

The Sixers quit blasting rap and dance music through the arena during play. The in-game entertainment was scaled back. Their public address announcer, whoused to gratingly yell “Iguo-dala-dala-dala-dala!” after one of his baskets, now says the name in concise fashion.

What a welcome and quickly noticeable change.

NOTES: Iguodala addressed the crowd before the game and told them the Sixerswill “continue to strive for that No. 1 goal and that’s to win thechampionship.” … One fan with a courtside seat stormed over to security tocomplain because a cameraman was blocking his view. “I paid $1,800 for thatseat!” he said.

Augustin finished with 15 points.

David Lee(notes) had 17 points and 18 rebounds, while Harrington and Nate Robinson(notes)had 17 points each. Gallinari made another case to be inserted in the startinglineup, scoring 16 points two nights after getting 22 in the loss to Miami.

Bobcats coach Larry Brown put his team through a 2-hour film sessionThursday, watching every detail of the ugly 92-59 loss to Boston a day earlier. In the first of 24 games this season against teams Brown once coached, theBobcats jumped out early.

While the Knicks were taking quick shots and missing, the Bobcats werebeating them in transition as Charlotte built a 32-13 lead. New York, whichmissed 20 of its first 25 shots, fell behind 47-26 and seemed out of it down73-55 less than a minute into the fourth quarter.

But Charlotte’s Tyson Chandler(notes) fouled out and the Knicks started hittingfrom the outside. Gallinari and Jared Jeffries(notes) both hit two 3-pointers, withJeffries’ second tying it at 80 with 3:17 left to complete a 25-7 run.

A series of missed shots by both teams, including an air ball by VladimirRadmanovic(notes), gave the Knicks a chance to win it, but Gallinari missed a long 3.

Diaw ended Charlotte’s nearly 5 1/2 -minute scoring drought with a tying layupwith 1:20 left in the first overtime. After Duhon dribbled the ball out ofbounds with 2.8 seconds left, Diaw missed a fadeaway at the buzzer, sending agame neither team seemed to want to win to a second extra period.

The Bobcats were again without their top two shooting guards. Raja Bell(notes), whohas a torn ligament in his left wrist, and Ronald “Flip” Murray (shin), whilethey got little from Chandler.

After getting shut out in Boston, he scored six points in the third quarter, but still looks far from being in game shape. Having trouble with his lift, hefouled out with 8:49 left with Charlotte leading 75-62.

Kobe Bryant(notes) led the Lakers with 20 points. Andrew Bynum(notes) had 14 points and 10rebounds, and reserve Shannon Brown(notes) added 12 points as the Lakers shot 39percent from the floor.

“That was one of the longest nights we’ve had in this building,” Lakerscoach Phil Jackson said. “We should refund the money to our fans. Every time wegot momentum we shot ourselves in our own foot.”

While the Mavs paraded to the line as the Lakers racked up 29 fouls, LosAngeles got there just 14 times, hitting nine shots.

The Lakers never made a run in the fourth, getting derailed by horrendousshooting and turnovers by Lamar Odom(notes), Josh Powell(notes) and Bryant. Their lonehighlight was Brown’s thundering dunk off Bryant’s jumper that bounced off therim. It got the crowd on its feet in a collective exclamation even with theLakers trailing by 12.

The fans were on their feet again to hit the exits with three minutesremaining and the Mavs ahead 90-73.

“I liked the way we played from start to finish,” Mavs coach Rick Carlislesaid. “We had a real determined collective mindset and it showed how we played. We were very aggressive and it showed in the number of times we got to the line. This is going to be key to our success, if we’re persistent, especially at thedefensive end.”

Dallas extended its lead to 73-54 in the third on a 13-2 run, with fourpoints from Nowitzki and five by Terry. Two free throws and a driving layup byJose Barea later gave Dallas its largest lead of 22 points. Barea finished with12 points.

“It’s a big win character-wise because we had a flat game opening athome,” Kidd said of the Mavs’ 102-91 loss to Washington. “It helps us gainconfidence on the road that we can play with the best.”

The Lakers were called for two technicals, including Ron Artest’s(notes) first ofthe season moments after he was whistled for his fourth foul and went to thebench. Jackson brought back Brown and Jordan Farmar(notes), who were productive duringthe second quarter, but it didn’t help. The Lakers scored just 15 points in theperiod and trailed 78-60 going into the fourth.

“We probably wanted it a little too much and that’s what resulted in someof the turnovers, shots going in and out,” Bryant said. “You’ve got to getstops. Keep teams off the free throw line. We were just a little stagnant, butit will be better.”

The Mavericks led 52-45 at halftime, helped by 15 of 18 free-throw shooting.Jackson went deep into his bench in the second quarter, bringing in Brown,Farmar and Luke Walton(notes) for a stretch against the Mavs’ second unit.

Brown was especially effective, scoring 10 points, and Bynum added eight todraw Los Angeles into a tie at 37, with Bryant returning during that run. Butthe Mavs dominated the final 4 1/2 minutes, outscoring the Lakers 15-8.

Notes: Lakers F Pau Gasol(notes) missed his second game with a strained righthamstring. The team is hopeful he can return Sunday against Atlanta. … TheMavs were without F Josh Howard(notes) (left ankle surgery) and F Tim Thomas(notes) (rightknee surgery).

Amare Stoudemire added 20 points and Grant Hill(notes) had 18 for Phoenix.

Monta Ellis(notes) led the Warriors with 19 points, while Kelenna Azubuike(notes) added17.

Nash’s 20 assists were two shy of his career high, set in a triple-overtimegame against New York on Jan. 2, 2006.

He narrowly missed his first 20-point, 20-assist game in regulation. He hadone in that three-overtime game against the Knicks.

Nash had 21 assists—his fifth game with 20 assists—at Detroit last Feb.8.

He said the 20-assist mark was no big deal.

“It’s better than getting four,” Nash said, “but for me I want to win thegame. I can get five assists or 20 assists and if we win, it doesn’t matter. Ifyou get a bunch of assists, it means a lot of guys are scoring—which isnice.”

He said the Suns need to win the few early season games they have at home.

“I think everyone knows—17 of 26 on the road to start the season—sowe’ve got to win some of these early ones and we’ve got to win some of thesehome games so that we can give ourselves a little confidence,” Nash said, “anda little breathing room so if we lose a couple it’s not the end of the world.”

Golden State rookie point guard Stephen Curry(notes), who had 12 points and fourassists, got an up-close look at Nash.

“He saw a great point guard tonight that he would like to emulate,”Warriors coach Don Nelson said.

Nash understands the comparisons people have made between him and Curry.

“I think there are a lot of similarities,” Nash said. “… I really likehis game. I think he’s going to have a fantastic career and I really lookforward to watching him develop.”

Barbosa, starting in place of the suspended Jason Richardson(notes), scored 12points in the second quarter when Phoenix took control. Stoudemire had 10 pointsin the third as the Suns pulled away.

Phoenix shot 54 percent, including making 12 of 22 3s, compared with 46percent shooting for the Warriors.

“They dominated the whole game,” Golden State’s Stephen Jackson(notes) said. “Wewere real soft out there.”

Up 62-51 at halftime, Phoenix scored the first five points of the thirdquarter—on Barbosa’s three-point play and Stoudemire’s fastbreak dunk—totake a 16-point lead.

“We made it pretty easy for them, I thought,” Nelson said.

Frye, buried on the bench in Portland last season, made his first six 3s,including four in a row in the fourth quarter to help Nash reach the 20-assistmark. Coach Alvin Gentry kept Nash in the game until there was 2:53 to play.

“Everybody’s just so unselfish on this team, it makes it fun to be outthere,” Frye said. “It’s tough for me to get used to people yelling at me fornot shooting.”

NOTES: Richardson was suspended by the NBA for the first two games of theseason because of his drunken driving conviction stemming from an arrest lastDecember. … Representatives of the WNBA champion Phoenix Mercury drew astanding ovation when introduced during a break in the first quarter. …Azubuike had nine points and four fouls in 11 minutes in the second quarter.
