Gasol crashed to the rim at the right block and tipped in Bryant’s shot toput the defending NBA champions ahead after they squandered a seven-point leadin the fourth quarter.

Gasol pumped both fists after the basket, and the Lakers moved on whenRussell Westbrook(notes) missed a desperation 3-pointer at the final buzzer.

Kevin Durant(notes) led the Thunder with 26 points on a dreadful 5-for-23 shootingnight. Westbrook had 21 points and nine assists.

Bryant scored 32 points and Gasol had nine points and 18 rebounds, scoringhis only basket of the second half at the end.

After missing 17 of his first 20 shots, Durant broke through with a3-pointer from the right wing that ignited a 10-0 comeback by the Thunder.Westbrook followed with a jumper, and his three-point play off a putback of hisown miss put Oklahoma City ahead 92-91 with 3:04 to play.

Durant added a driving layup to push the lead to three but Oklahoma Citycouldn’t score again in the final 2 1/2 minutes.

Bryant hit an 18-foot jumper from the left side to get Los Angeles withinone, and the Lakers delivered the knockout punch on their fifth chance.

Los Angeles advances to face the winner of the Denver-Utah series.

The extended series took its toll on a Los Angeles squad that already wasnursing more than its fair share of injuries. Andrew Bynum(notes) played the secondhalf with a brace on his right knee after he hyperextended it earlier in thegame. Lamar Odom(notes) had a brace on his right knee, too. Ron Artest(notes) sported amodified T-shirt with padding on his left shoulder that’s gotten a workoutagainst Durant, the youngest player to win the NBA scoring title.

Bryant has a sore knee, ankle and index finger. Bynum just got back from astrained Achilles’ tendon that cost him the final 13 games of the regularseason.

The Lakers may be battered but not beaten.

Bryant almost single-handedly kept Los Angeles out front with 16 points in adazzling third quarter—until it came to an early end for him when he picked uphis fourth foul while guarding Westbrook.

Bryant scored the Lakers’ first eight points of the second half to help histeam weather the Thunder’s charge back from a six-point deficit. Jeff Green(notes) hadthree dunks in the first 5 1/2 minutes of the third quarter as Oklahoma City wasable to run the fastbreak offense that had given L.A. trouble in the previoustwo games at the Ford Center.

Bryant had the answer, though, with a jumper and a 3-pointer to break tiesand then another 3 that put the Lakers up 73-67. Just after that, he waswhistled for his second foul in a 28-second span and headed to the bench.

The Thunder scored the next six points to tie it but then fell behind again,even with Bryant on the sidelines.

Luke Walton(notes) had a jumper and a 3-pointer on consecutive possessions to pushthe Lakers’ lead to seven, and it was 91-84 after Artest beat the shot clockbuzzer with a baseline jumper.

NOTES: Phil Jackson came up with an unexpected answer to a question aboutwhy visiting teams are generally more vulnerable. “You have to remember thesemen are out there in their underwear, in their shorts. These aren’t like the olddays but they are pretty scantily clad, and they are, you know, in front oftheir fans. Series Breakdown

Game 7 is Sunday in Atlanta.

Carlos Delfino(notes) scored 20 for the Bucks, who came into the game hoping tofinish off their heavily favored opponent but instead went completely flatcoming out of halftime. The Hawks outscored the Bucks 29-11 in the third quarterto take a 15-point lead.

Milwaukee made a furious comeback attempt in the last 6 minutes, cutting thelead to 7 with just over 5 minutes left, but Josh Smith’s(notes) block on John Salmons(notes)with just over 2 minutes remaining helped stop the rally and the Hawks pulledaway.

Al Horford(notes) had 15 points and 15 rebounds for Atlanta.

It was an off night for two of the Bucks’ top offensive threats, Salmons andBrandon Jennings(notes).

Jennings scored 12 points on 4-for-15 shooting, including 1 of 9 from3-point range. The rookie missed his first six shots and made questionabledecisions with the ball after playing well through most of the first five gamesof the series.

Salmons finished with eight points on 2-for-13 shooting.

The Hawks got what they needed off the bench from Crawford, the NBA’s sixthman of the year. He had been stuck in a shooting slump for much of the seriesbut was better Friday, hitting 8 of 17 from the field. His late layup helped theHawks take the air out of the Bucks’ late rally.

Milwaukee’s Jerry Stackhouse(notes)—who brought down the house by singing asoulful rendition of the national anthem before the game—made a 3-pointer, andthe Bucks turned it into a four-point play when Kurt Thomas(notes) was fouled and hit afree throw.

Two more free throws by Stackhouse cut the lead to seven with 5:14 left, butJohnson hit a jumper and Crawford drove for a layup to put the Hawks back up by11. Jennings answered with a layup, and Johnson missed a layup.

Jennings then missed a 3-pointer and Salmons got the rebound, but Smithforcefully blocked Salmons’ shot and the Hawks couldn’t rally from there.

Milwaukee led by three at the half, and Delfino hit a driving layup to beginthe third quarter.

But the Bucks went silent for nearly eight minutes from there, allowing theHawks to go on a 19-0 run that included a steal and fast-break slam dunk bySmith, who fired up the crowd by posing and holding his hand to his ear.

Smith has been booed relentlessly by Bucks fans after joking early in theseries that there wasn’t anything to do in Milwaukee.

Milwaukee wasn’t expected to do much in this series, having lost its bestall-around player, center Andrew Bogut(notes), to a gruesome arm injury near the end ofthe regular season.

Atlanta took a 2-0 series lead, and the Bucks weren’t particularlycompetitive in either game. But then the series shifted back to Milwaukee, theBucks asserted themselves on defense and won both games—then stole Game 5 inAtlanta with a late run.

NOTES: Stackhouse surprised the crowd by grabbing the microphone before thegame and singing the national anthem to raucous applause—so much so thatwhatever he yelled to fire up the crowd afterward couldn’t be heard. … Smithhad 10 points, nine rebounds and four blocks. … Friday was the 39thanniversary of Milwaukee’s 1971 NBA championship.

James’ elbow not issue during workout

INDEPENDENCE, Ohio (AP)—Cavaliers star LeBron James(notes) is showing no signs ofbeing bothered by a right elbow injury while attempting shots during practice.

James has a strain and bone bruise on his right elbow, which has beenhurting him for weeks. He wore a protective sleeve on his arm Friday duringCleveland’s preparations for Saturday’s series opener against the BostonCeltics.

Cavs coach Mike Brown said James was not limited in practice, but that histeam did not have any contact drills.

James shot midrange jumpers and free throws with his right hand during theportion of Cleveland’s workout that was open to the media.

James is scheduled to have a follow-up MRI on the injury next week.

Agent: PG Ford to return to Pacers

INDIANAPOLIS (AP)—Indiana Pacers point guard T.J. Ford(notes) will pick up the playeroption on the final year of his contract and return to the team next season.

Bob Myers, Ford’s agent, said the paperwork is in process. Ford is owed $8.5million next year.

Ford joined the team via a trade with Toronto two years ago. He averaged acareer-high 14.9 points his first season with the Pacers, despite splitting timewith Jarrett Jack(notes).

Pacers coach Jim O’Brien had high hopes for Ford heading into this season,but he struggled. O’Brien benched him for a month at midseason in favor of EarlWatson(notes) and rookie A.J. Price(notes).

After O’Brien started playing Ford again, he suffered a left groin injuryand didn’t play after March 12. He averaged 10.3 points in 47 games.

Arenas sued by company over gun fees

SANTA MONICA, Calif. (AP)—Gilbert Arenas(notes) has more gun problems.

In March, the Washington Wizards guard got 30 days in a halfway house forbringing guns into the team’s locker room.

Now a lawsuit claims he owes a Beverly Hills company more than $70,000 forstoring guns he bought and never picked up.

Tactical Operations sued Arenas last week in Los Angeles County SuperiorCourt in Santa Monica. The firm claims it obtained five Beretta pistols withsilencers for Arenas in 2006.

The suit says Arenas bought the guns but refused to pick them up. AttorneyBurton Jacobson says the firm is selling the weapons but Arenas owes storagefees and interest.

A call to Arenas’ attorney, Ken Wainstein, wasn’t immediately returnedFriday.

No love lost between Cavaliers, Celtics

CLEVELAND (AP)—LeBron James’(notes) famed right elbow won’t be the only one drawingattention.

Bitter enemies, the Boston Celtics and Cleveland Cavaliers are about toexchange elbows, shoves, insults and baskets in the NBA playoffs.

This reunion won’t be peaceful.

“We don’t like them, they don’t like us,” Cavaliers guard Mo Williams(notes)said. “It’s obvious.”

It’s on. Again.

For the second time in three years, the Cavaliers and Celtics will meet inthe Eastern Conference semifinals, renewing a sweltering rivalry that has grownwith intensity and will be ratcheted up to a new extreme when the clubs open thebest-of-seven series on Saturday beneath a fire-spewing scoreboard insideQuicken Loans Arena.

Forget the buzzer.

Maybe a ring-side bell would be better to signal the end of each quarter.

“It’s going to be a good heavyweight fight,” Boston’s Paul Pierce(notes) said.

The Celtics and Cavs, who played a knock-down-drag-out series won by Bostonin seven games two years ago, have been pummeling each other for some time.

A few years back, Pierce spit in the direction of Cleveland’s bench duringan exhibition game. Last October, the teams got into a minor fracas during apreseason game in Columbus, Ohio, when Mo Williams retaliated with an elbowafter being flung to the floor by Celtics forward Shelden Williams(notes), who justhappens to be the brother-in-law of Cleveland forward Anthony Parker(notes).

Even James’ mom, Gloria, once got into it with Pierce, screaming at himafter he wrapped up her baby boy on a breakaway dunk during the 2008 playoffs.

Tempers flared during the team’s previous meeting on April 4. Down by 22points in the third quarter, the Cavaliers stormed back before losing 117-113 ina game that featured six technical fouls, the ejection of Cavs coach Mike Brownand some animated, R-rated trash talk between James and Boston’s Kevin Garnett(notes)and Tony Allen(notes).

“They do a lot of talking,” James said. “At some point in time they backit up, too. We’re looking forward to it. We’re not much of a talking group, butwe’re not going to back down from anybody. It’s going to be a really fun, reallyphysical series.”

James, who will accept his second straight MVP trophy on Sunday in Akronbetween Games 1 and 2, is entering the series with an injured right elbow thathe says has been bothering him on and off for weeks. An MRI exam revealed asprain and bone bruise, and James will wear a padded, protective sleeve to helpabsorb any contact.

On Friday, he didn’t seem bothered by the elbow while shooting mid-rangejumpers during the portion of Cleveland’s practice that was open to the media.The mystery surrounding James’ injury provided a sexy subplot leading into theseries, but Boston players are wary.

“I figure this,” Pierce said, “LeBron with a bad elbow is still betterthan 95 percent of the league. So it doesn’t matter.”

Two years removed from their 17th NBA title, the Celtics are coming in ashealthy as they’ve been in months and with renewed confidence after steamrollingthrough Miami in the first round.

Boston’s depth and defense were too much for the Heat, whose only win in theseries came when Dwyane Wade(notes) scored 46 in the playoff game of his career.

James and the Cavaliers present many more problems.

“LeBron’s a different beast,” Garnett said. “He’s obviously with a bettercast than D-Wade. I think D-Wade is one of the best one-on-one players in ourgame. That’s true with LeBron but I think LeBron defers more to his teammates alittle bit, with his supporting cast than D-Wade.”

James has never had more help.

Two years ago, he pushed the Celtics to a Game 7 without Williams orShaquille O’Neal(notes) or Antawn Jamison(notes), who has become Cleveland’s No. 2 option onoffense.

And it didn’t take Jamison, acquired in a deadline trade from Washington,long to appreciate the extent of the Cavaliers-Celtics blood feud.

His fourth game with Cleveland was in Boston on Feb. 25, when O’Nealsustained a torn thumb ligament on a block by Celtics center Glen Davis(notes). O’Neallater underwent surgery and the injury took on added life when TV replaysappeared to show Davis grabbing and twisting Shaq’s thumb.

O’Neal doesn’t think Davis tried to intentionally hurt him and said he’s notdrawing any extra motivation because the Celtics are next on Cleveland’s climbtoward a first title.

“The only incentive I’m worried about is the final goal,” O’Neal said.“We know they’re a tough team. We know they’re chasing the same thing thatwe’re chasing. We just have to keep our heads, keep our composure and do whatwe’re supposed to do.”

Jamison said the experience of his first two Boston-Cleveland games preparedhim for what’s to come. He knows that the Celtics, given up as too old tocontend before the playoffs began, would like nothing more than to knock out theCavaliers.

“They want to prove to everybody that they still have a lot left in thetank,” Jamison said. “No team is going to give an inch. We’re going to fightto the end and they are going to do the same. It’s going to be fun to be a partof. There’s going to be a lot of bumps and bruises, but this is what it’s allabout.”

Blazers excelled despite many injuries

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP)—The Portland Trail Blazers, ousted from the first round ofthe playoffs for the second straight year, head into the offseason anything butbitter.

The Blazers had adversity aplenty.

Portland had lofty hopes coming into this season. The team had theformidable 7-foot tag-team of Greg Oden(notes) and Joel Przybilla(notes) at center, anchorsBrandon Roy(notes) and forward LaMarcus Aldridge(notes), and the addition of free agent pointguard Andre Miller(notes).

But bit by bit throughout the season, the Blazers’ talented core wasstrained by injuries. In all, Portland players missed a combined 311regular-season games because of injury, second only to Golden State and mostamong playoff teams.

Bobcats coach Brown weighing return

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP)—Larry Brown is being pulled in different directions as heweighs whether to return for a third season as coach of the Charlotte Bobcats.

At his end-of-season availability with reporters on Friday, thewell-traveled Brown showed two sides. While he talked about his love forcoaching and his eagerness to make the Bobcats better, he also lamented aboutthe time he’s spent away from his wife and teenage children in Philadelphia.

“I’ve got a 13-year-old daughter and a 15-year-old son and the time I’maway from them I can’t get that back,” Brown said. “I’ll be 70 (in September).I don’t feel that way unless I look in the mirror, but I’ve got to go home andtalk to my wife because I love her and I love my kids.”

Brown has coached a record 10 pro teams and has had three college headcoaching jobs. So his indecision has opened speculation he could bolt for yetanother job—at the same time the Philadelphia 76ers are looking for a coach.

But Brown repeated that he wouldn’t coach for anyone other than Bobcatsowner Michael Jordan.

“I don’t want this to drag on,” Brown said. “But I think the worst thingyou can do is make a decision right after the playoffs. But I still want tocoach and I told that to Michael, that I don’t want to coach for anyone else.”

Brown has helped the 6-year-old Bobcats to new heights. They went 44-38 thisseason and reached the playoffs for the first time, only to be swept in thefirst round by Orlando.

Brown talked about upgrades needed on offense and the team’s difficultposition in regards to the salary cap with point guard Raymond Felton(notes) set tobecome an unrestricted free agent, while forward Tyrus Thomas(notes) will be arestricted free agent.

As Brown excitedly talked about needing to make younger players on the teambetter, he was asked if he could see himself not coaching.

“No, but there’s an opening at Episcopal High School in Philly,” he joked.

Brown’s future is the immediate priority for Jordan, who spent $275 millionlast month to become the first ex-player to become an NBA majority owner.

“I’m not going to let him go so easily,” Jordan said on Wednesday afterplaying in a golf pro-am. “There are rumors out there, but right now they arerumors. Until he comes to me and says anything otherwise, it’s business asusual.”

As Brown finished up with reporters, he was headed to Philadelphia, eager tosee his children.

Cavs, Celtics set to rumble in playoffs

CLEVELAND (AP)—LeBron James’(notes) elbow won’t be the only one getting attentionwhen the Cleveland Cavaliers and Boston Celtics meet in the NBA playoffs.

The two teams have a strong dislike for each other and will be meeting forthe second time in three years when their series begins on Saturday. The Celticsdefeated the Cavs in seven physical games in the 2008 Eastern Conferencesemifinals on the way to winning their 17th title.

James is not expected to be slowed by a strained and bruised elbow, whichhas been bothering him for weeks.

The teams split their four regular-season meetings, with Boston winning thelast 117-113 on April 4, a game that featured some major trash talking betweenJames and Celtics star Kevin Garnett(notes).

Nowitzki to wait on free agency decision

DALLAS (AP)—Dirk Nowitzki(notes) isn’t saying yet whether he’s going to become a freeagent or return to the Dallas Mavericks next season.

The German forward said he needs a week or two to get over hisdisappointment after the Mavs were knocked out of the playoffs in the firstround by San Antonio.

The former MVP can opt out of his contract July 1. He’s always said he wantsto remain in Dallas his entire career, but he said Friday he plans “to keep myoptions open and see what happens.”
