Kidd’s 65-footer lifts Mavs to road win
October 31, 2010
LOS ANGELES (AP)—Swish. Nothing but net from 65 feet out.
That’s how Jason Kidd(notes) ended the first half against the Los Angeles Clippers, and it was likely the earliest game-turning shot the All-Star point guard evermade against an opponent. Kidd’s miracle shot-put heave from inside the 3-pointarc at the opposite end just beat the buzzer, and the Mavericks went on to beatthe Clippers 99-83 on Sunday.
“I got the rebound, maybe with 2 seconds left, and I was going to eat it.But (Jason Terry(notes)) told me to shoot it,” said Kidd, who finished with 13 points, nine rebounds and seven assists. “I’m not going for the 3-point record,percentage-wise, so I let it go and it was on line. A lot of times when they’reon line, they don’t go in. So I got lucky.

“A lot of times those can be momentum shots for the team that makes it, andit can definitely deflate a team if you’re on the other end of it. We felt wecould build on it, and we went from there.”
The Mavericks, who squandered an 11-point lead in the first half beforetaking a 49-47 halftime lead on Kidd’s miracle shot, pulled ahead 63-52 with a10-1 spurt capped by Tyson Chandler’s(notes) slam dunk off an alley-oop feed from Kiddwith 7:23 left in the third period. Dallas built the margin to 16 on JoseBarea’s 3-pointer with 8 1/2 minutes remaining, and the Clippers got no closer than11 points after that.
“We wanted it. We needed to stay active,” reserve forward Shawn Marion(notes)said. “I think everybody was making extra passes and looking for each other. That’s the mark of a great team. And I think the more we keep helping eachother, the better we are. For us to spread the wealth like this is amazing. It’sa great feeling and a great win because we were coming off a rough loss lastnight and we needed this one.”
Caron Butler(notes) scored 17 points and Dirk Nowitzki(notes) added 16 points and sevenrebounds. Marion got 10 of his 12 points in the fourth quarter for the defendingSouthwest Division champions in their first road game of the season.
“Marion is a really key part of our team,” coach Rick Carlisle said.“He’s embraced his role, which is not easy for a guy that’s a four-timeAll-Star. But he’s just kept his head completely into it, and that’s somethingthat runs off on everybody. Right now, what he’s doing, he’s become a realleader on this team. He keeps guys into it and he’s been ready to come in andmake things happen.”
Rookie Blake Griffin(notes) had 16 points and nine rebounds for the Clippers, whomissed 14 of their first 16 shots and finished at 34 percent while falling to0-3 on the season under new coach Vinny Del Negro. None of the starters reacheddouble digits until Griffin converted a slam dunk with 5:32 left in the thirdquarter.
“We got down offensively and didn’t make shots, which affected ourdefense,” point guard Baron Davis(notes) said. “We just ran into a team that stuck totheir game plan. The team that sticks to their game plan is the team that isgoing to win.”
Griffin missed nine of his first 11 shots and also was hit with his firsttechnical foul in his third NBA game from referee Mark Lindsay after teammateRyan Gomes(notes) was called for his fifth personal with 3:06 to play.
“He didn’t shoot particularly well and missed some easy ones he usuallymakes,” Del Negro said. “But teams are going to scout him and play himdifferent ways, and that is part of the growing he has to go through and thematuration process. If guys are backing off him, he’s got to feel comfortabletaking the outside jump shots—or, depending who’s guarding him, overpowerhim.”
Davis came up empty on his first five attempts before connecting on a20-footer that trimmed Dallas’ lead to eight at 66-58 with 5:58 left in thethird. Rasual Butler(notes), the Clippers’ 3-point specialist, was 0 for 5 from behindthe arc and played 21 scoreless minutes.
“Our tempo has to pick up. I don’t like our tempo right now,” Del Negrosaid. “We have to push the ball a little bit more and get more field goalattempts. We have to get the ball in the attack some more, then get into playsets and set up screens and be more efficient with our timing and execution.”
The Clippers played without backup point guard Randy Foye(notes), who tweaked hishamstring during Saturday’s practice and is expected to miss one or two weeksaccording to Del Negro. The club will have a better idea of Foye’s statusMonday.
NOTES: The Clippers have lost the last seven times they’ve played onHalloween, including a 93-84 defeat to the Mavericks a year ago at StaplesCenter. The last time they won on this date was in 1985 during the only 5-0start in franchise history. … Del Negro is the third Clippers coach to losehis first three games after getting hired in the offseason since the team movedto Los Angeles in 1984. Heat win third straight, blow out Nets
October 31, 2010
NEWARK, N.J. (AP)—LeBron James(notes) scored 20 points, Chris Bosh(notes) and DwyaneWade(notes) were close behind, and the Miami Heat ended the New Jersey Nets’ unbeatenstart with a 101-78 victory Sunday.
Bosh finished with 18 points and Wade added 17, both getting most of them inMiami’s dominant first half before sitting out the fourth quarter. James playeda little of the final period and added seven rebounds and seven assists.
It was the most impressive offensive performance yet for the Heat, who havewon three straight since beginning their new era with a loss in Boston onopening night. Miami shot 68 percent in the first half, when its Big Threecombined for 41 points—one fewer than New Jersey—and the stats only loweredwhen the reserves took over toward the end.
Brook Lopez(notes) scored 20 points in the Nets’ first loss this season before newowner Mikhail Prokhorov, who watched his third game this week before headingback to Russia.
The Nets followed their 12-70 finish from last season by opening withvictories over Detroit and Sacramento—an especially good start since they setan NBA record by dropping their first 18 games of 2009-10.
But those are lottery teams. Miami is a powerhouse.
The Heat were coming off their first big victory, overpowering rival Orlando96-70 on Friday night in their home opener. Coach Erik Spoelstra said beforeSunday’s early start he hoped there would be no hangover.
Nothing to worry about.
Even with James picking up a pair of early fouls, the Heat made 10-of-14shots (71 percent) in the first quarter, building a double-digit lead less thanhalfway through the period en route to a 29-18 cushion after one.
Zydrunas Ilgauskas(notes), who followed James from Cleveland to Miami, started thesecond quarter with a flurry, and the lead was up to 18 after a dunk by James. The Nets couldn’t do much to cut into it and the Heat led 58-42 at halftime.
James made his first visit to a team he met with during free agency. Headmitted Sunday he would change some things about the process if he had thechance—he didn’t specify what they were—but reiterated he’s comfortable hemade the right decision.
The Nets were the first team to sit down with James and believed the newdirection they promised under Prokhorov gave them a chance. James praised theorganization before the game but fans apparently haven’t forgiven, booing theformer crowd favorite during introductions and the first few times he touchedthe ball—though there were loud cheers when he threw down a couple of powerfuldunks.
Carlos Arroyo(notes) had 12 points for the Heat, who broke 100 points for the firsttime and finished at 54 percent from the field.
Notes: Prokhorov was sitting in his suite next to Roman Abramovich, theRussian who owns the Chelsea soccer club. … The game drew an announced crowdof 17,086. With the Heat in town, parking spots that usually go for $20 or $25were $30 on Sunday. … News of the Nets’ move apparently didn’t reach theHeat’s game notes, which still list two games in East Rutherford this season.
James would change aspects of decision
October 31, 2010
NEWARK, N.J. (AP)—LeBron James(notes) said Sunday he would change some things ifhe had a do-over on his free agency.
Picking New Jersey instead of Miami wouldn’t be one of them.
“I’m happy I’m in this uniform, but much respect to the Nets,” James saidbefore the Heat faced the Nets.
He didn’t say what aspects he would change—his decision to announce hisdestination on the heavily criticized “The Decision” TV special being the easyguess—only that he was comfortable with his choice of the Heat but there weresome things he would do “a little different.”
Nor did James say whether the Nets, the first team to meet with him, everreally had a chance.
James would only say his summer sit-down with Nets officials, includingowner Mikhail Prokhorov and coach Avery Johnson, was a positive experience.
“I’m here in Miami, but it was a great meeting,” James said. “I left withdefinitely respect for this organization, respect for Avery Johnson, respect forthe owner and for everyone that has anything to do with the Nets. Nothing badfrom that meeting and nothing bad I have to say about this organization. It wasgreat.”
Not good enough, though. James chose the Heat and the chance to join up withDwyane Wade(notes) and Chris Bosh(notes), instead of a team that was coming off a 12-70finish.
But James said the Nets’ record last season didn’t automatically eliminatethem.
“No, you can’t go off that. They’re 2-0 now, so I don’t think they wontheir first game until mid-December last year. So you can’t go from previousyears,” James said. “If that’s the case, this Miami Heat team won like 15games (in 2007-08). Before I got to the Cavs, they only won 17, even though Ididn’t have anything to do with that because of the lottery. But you don’t takea team’s past year and based on what the following year could be.”
The Nets visited Cleveland on July 1, kicking off the most-hyped free agencyperiod in league history. They were optimistic, believing James would beintrigued by a pitch from Prokhorov, the Russian billionaire who had recentlycompleted his purchase of the team and boasted he would increase their profileglobally.
Plus, James has a longtime friendship with rap mogul Jay-Z, a minority ownerof the team. The Nets’ case could have been strengthened if they were already inBrooklyn, but their planned move has stalled and they are now scheduled to playtwo years in Newark before the Barclays Center opens.
James said he didn’t know if that hurt New Jersey.
“I think this place is great,” he said. “Brooklyn is a great city also. But I’ve never been in Newark, I’ve never been in Brooklyn, so I don’t know ifit would have helped the case or not.”
James was booed frequently in the first half, though there were loud cheersafter a pair of powerful dunks.

Roy scored 29 points and LaMarcus Aldridge(notes) added 20 points and 10 rebounds.Andre Miller(notes) had 19 points and 10 assists as the Trail Blazers improved to 3-0.
Aldridge hit the tiebreaking free throw with 25.5 seconds left, and both heand Miller made two apiece in the final half-minute as the Blazers weren’t fazedby a close game after two double-digit victories to open the season.
“You don’t want to have to continue to do that, but these guys are notdropping their heads,” Portland coach Nate McMillan said. “They’re playing a48-minute game.”
Wilson Chandler(notes) finished with 22 points and 16 rebounds for the Knicks, whomade only one field goal after taking a 92-83 lead with 5:31 remaining. AmareStoudemire scored 18 points but turned it over six times in his home debut.
Raymond Felton(notes), also making his Madison Square Garden debut with the Knicks, scored 16 points.
It was encouraging home start for the Knicks—until crunch time, when noneof their new additions could find the basket.
“We just didn’t score. We were up nine. They made some nice shots. Thingsdidn’t go well for us,” Knicks coach Mike D’Antoni said.
New York’s lead was gone after Portland rallied to grab a 95-94 advantage onMiller’s 3-pointer with 2:08 to play. Felton’s foul shot tied it with 1:23remaining, and it stayed that way until Aldridge was fouled on an offensiverebound and made one free throw for a 96-95 lead with 25.5 seconds left.
Marcus Camby(notes) blocked Felton’s drive, Aldridge made another free throw, andthe Knicks lost a chance to tie when a ball that was originally called out ofbounds on Portland with 6.5 seconds left was overturned when instant replayshowed it was off Stoudemire. Miller then made two free throws to put it away.
“We’re still getting used to each other, still trying to get thatchemistry, but things didn’t go our way,” Felton said. “I think we made somegood plays, some good calls. It’s a tough loss, especially when you get a six-,seven-point lead going with 2 1/2 minutes left in the game. It’s tough to lose agame like that.”
It was an all-too familiar finish for a team trying to move away from itsawful recent past.
The Knicks have 10 new players on the roster as they try to return to thepostseason for the first time since 2004. New York shares the league’s longestcurrent playoff drought with Minnesota and is mired in a franchise-worst stretchof nine straight losing seasons.
Boxing ring announcer Michael Buffer introduced the Knicks before the game, saying it was time to “turn the page to a new chapter of the New York Knicks.”
The first quarter was nothing new at all.
The Knicks surrendered 58 percent shooting, hit only 36 percent themselves, and trailed by as many as 10 points. The lead was still 10 midway though thesecond before reserve Chandler led a 16-3 run that gave New York a 42-39 lead onFelton’s 3-pointer with 1:54 remaining.
Chandler had 15 points and 12 rebounds in 17 minutes in the first half, which ended in a 44-all tie.
Notes: The Knicks fell to 33-32 in home openers. … Portland is 2-0 on afour-game trip that concludes with games Monday at Chicago and Tuesday atMilwaukee. … A Blazers spokesman confirmed the team won’t offer former No. 1pick Greg Oden(notes) an extension on his rookie contract. The oft-injured center isstill recovering from a fractured left patella last December that ended hisseason early.

Manu Ginobili(notes) led San Antonio with 23 points.
The Hornets are off to their fourth 3-0 start in the last five years, thistime after a summer spent picking up two products of the Spurs’ system to makeNew Orleans competitive again. Williams played and coached as an assistant underPopovich, and new general manager Dell Demps was plucked from the Spurs’ frontoffice.
The way New Orleans shut down San Antonio defensively in the third quarter,it looked as though the Hornets took Popovich’s most valued fundamental withthem.
After leading for nearly all of the first half, the Spurs shot just 6 of 24in the third while falling behind by 16. Paul scored 10 in the quarter, and whenSan Antonio threatened to come back in the final minute, the All-Star guard putthe Spurs away for good.
With the Hornets up by five and the Spurs pressing, Paul used a crossoverdribble to blow by guard George Hill(notes) and sink a driving bank shot over theoutstretched arms of three Spurs.
It came moments after Willie Green(notes), cutting toward the basket, took a passfrom West and coasted to the basket for an uncontested layup. The defensivebreakdown infuriated Popovich, who stormed onto the court and gruffly called atimeout.
It was the first 20-point game of the season for Paul, who was 8 of 15 fromthe floor. He also had five assists.
Richard Jefferson(notes) scored 18 points for the Spurs, including 10 in thefourth. Tim Duncan(notes) had just seven points on 2 for 10 shooting.
The Spurs began Saturday with the unexpected announcement of Parker signinga four-year extension, abruptly squelching what would’ve been a season ofspeculation.
But by the end of the night, the Hornets spoiled Parker’s big day.
After hitting his first four shots, Parker finished the game making just oneof his next six. Popovich sat him for the entire fourth quarter, while Duncanplayed only a half-minute.
Parker started his 10th NBA season staring down the end of a six-year, $66million deal. His future didn’t appear headed for a swift resolution, but Spurssigned him to a new deal after only one game.
The Hornets beat the Spurs for the first time in five tries, includinggetting swept by San Antonio last season.
Notes: Williams said he’s still not set on the Hornets’ rotation despitetheir strong start, saying New Orleans still needs rookie Quincy Pondexter(notes) inthe mix. … Spurs F Matt Bonner(notes) is expected to be out through at least nextweek with a right ankle sprain.

Joakim Noah(notes) had 15 points and 17 rebounds. Taj Gibson(notes) scored 11. JamesJohnson(notes) wound up with eight points and nine rebounds, and the Bulls delivered inthe end after coming up short down the stretch in the opener against OklahomaCity.
Chicago overcame a spectacular first half by former Bulls star Ben Gordon(notes),who scored all of his 21 points before intermission, and held the Pistons to4-of-21 shooting in the fourth, making them 0-3 for the first time since theydropped the first four games of the 1999-2000 season.
The Pistons carried an 82-67 lead into the fourth after Charlie Villanueva’s(notes)buzzer-beating 3-pointer and were still ahead by 13 before C.J. Watson(notes) hit ajumper to start the decisive run.
Johnson nailed a 3 to tie it at 86 with five minutes left, whipping thecrowd into a frenzy. A basket by Richard Hamilton(notes) briefly put the Pistons backon top, but the Bulls weren’t finished.
Gibson hit a fadeaway to tie it again. Noah gave Chicago its first leadsince the first quarter when he tipped in Rose’s missed drive with 2:37 left, and Rose added two free throws to make it 92-88 20 seconds later.
A free throw by Rodney Stuckey(notes) made it a three-point game, but thunderousdunks by Gibson and Johnson along with a jumper by Rose with 42 seconds leftincreased Chicago’s advantage to 98-89, sealing a dramatic win.
The Bulls are aiming higher after back-to-back first-round playoff exits andunderwent a major offseason overhaul, bringing in new coach Tom Thibodeau andrevising their roster. They won’t be at full strength for a while, though.
Carlos Boozer(notes), their big addition, broke a bone in his right hand in a fallat home and is expected to miss the first month. And things weren’t looking goodfor the Bulls in the early going.
Gordon, who scored 31 the previous night against Oklahoma City, was aperfect 5-for-5 from the field and hit all 10 of his free-throw attempts in thefirst half. He spent much of the opening quarter in a T-shirt icing his leftshoulder. He entered to loud boos when he checked in with just over two minutesleft in the period, then spent the rest of the half drawing groans from thecrowd as he tried to bury his former team.
NOTES: Pistons G Will Bynum(notes) sat out his second game in as many nightsbecause of a hamstring injury. Bynum injured his right hamstring during thepreseason and aggravated it Wednesday night a season-opening loss to New Jersey.… Hall of Famer Scottie Pippen got a loud reception and waved to the crowdwhen he was shown on the scoreboard early in the second quarter.

Charlotte’s sloppy start to the season continued. After committing 38turnovers in the first two games, the Bobcats added 18 more in the first of athree-game road trip.
Milwaukee got 23 points from Carlos Delfino(notes), who hugged Jennings at centercourt after the game, and 14 from John Salmons(notes).
D.J. Augustin(notes) scored 26 points and Stephen Jackson(notes) had 23 for the Bobcats, who only led once—on Augustin’s 3-pointer midway through the second quarter.Milwaukee quickly took the lead back and went ahead 73-62 after the thirdquarter.
The only real drama would be if Jennings would reach the mark he nearlyaccomplished in his first game as a pro. He aggressively went after a reboundlate in the third quarter, yanking it from a teammate and pumping his fist afteran assist on the next possession.
The charismatic point guard got his 10th rebound with 5:23 to play and the10th assist less than a minute later on Delfino’s 3-pointer that made it 88-76.
The Bobcats answered with a 7-0 run, but Jennings hit a 3 and Delfino made ascoop shot that kept Charlotte from coming closer down the stretch.
Jennings, who had a 55-point game as a rookie last November, had Milwaukee’sfirst triple-double since Ramon Sessions(notes) did it on April 1, 2009, in a loss tothe Lakers.
Charlotte can’t figure out how to keep possession.
The Bobcats had five turnovers in less than nine minutes to start the gameand the frustration appears to be mounting after making the playoffs for thefirst time in its six-year franchise history with 44 wins last season.
Milwaukee won 46 games and made the postseason, too, but didn’t have Bogutafter the eye-averting fall ended his season early.
Bogut proved he was back in a big way right from the start. In the firstquarter, he had a hard two-handed slam and pulled himself up on the rim that wasvaguely reminiscent of the one that caused his awkward fall.
He landed firmly on his feet this time as the Bucks beat Charlotte for the11th time in the Bobcats’ 12 appearances in Milwaukee.
NOTES: It was the second triple-double of the NBA season after Rajon Rondo(notes)had 10 points, 10 rebounds and 24 assists in a win on Friday night over theKnicks. …There was a video tribute to Bango, who was named NBA mascot of theyear for his high flying antics last season. He received a trophy with a goldenball atop it and got a hug from Bango Jr. Kevin Vanderkolk wears the costume.… It was the first regular season game with the Bradley Center’s new $3.4million scoreboard, and fans could clearly read the lips of a frustrated coachLarry Brown when a shot by Jackson wasn’t counted after the halftime buzzer.
